The John Walker & Sons Private Collection 2017 Edition, also known as “Mastery of Oak,” is a limited-release blended Scotch whisky that showcases the impact of oak on flavor. It was crafted using three vattings of malt and grain whiskies, each aged in different types of oak casks to highlight the influence of wood on the final product. This 75cl bottle is part of a global release of only 5,588 individually numbered decanters.

- Three Vattings:
- First-fill American oak: Malt and grain whiskies aged in these casks contribute creamy toffee and soft spice notes.
- Refill American and European oak: These casks, mostly American, allow the distillery character of Highland and Speyside malts to shine through, with notes of blackcurrants, berries, peach skin, and stewed apples.
- Experimental casks: These casks, including some “salt cured” and with different char profiles, add depth and complexity with notes of leather and spices.
- First-fill American oak: Malt and grain whiskies aged in these casks contribute creamy toffee and soft spice notes.
- Flavor Profile: The whisky is described as having a vibrant and fresh nose with notes of honey, vanilla, and caramelised sultanas, along with wood spices like cinnamon and all-spice. The palate is warming, rounded, and rich, with notes of pear, red apple skin, sultanas, candied orange peel, and a hint of dried mango, all supported by honey, butterscotch, and milk chocolate.
